English in the EU

English is the most commonly used language in the EU25 (*)

51% speak it either as mother tongue (13%) or as a foreign language (38%)

according to the "Special Eurobarometer 243" of the European Commission with the title "Europeans and their Languages" Feb. 2006

(*) thus does not include Bulgarian and Romanian polling stats, only of the 25 EU member states in 2006).


The corresponding numbers for German and French are:
German 32% (18% + 14%)
French 26% (12% + 14%)

English 51% (13% + 38%)

Note: There are 23 official languages in the #EU (with some special provisions re Irish and Maltese)
